portale portale

The church of St. Augustine stands at the northeastern edge of the city, near one of the gates of the walls from the 1300s, Porta Carbonara. The church has a horizontally crowned facade which contains a rich modern rose window (built in the mid-1930s) and a beautiful, richly sculpted, late gothic portal (1428). Notable are the statues of the Archangel Gabriel and Our Lady of the Assumption, and the images of friars that formed the unusual ornamental design of one of the frames of the lunette, which are no longer visible today, having been stolen by unknowns. The interior of the church, completely redone in the 1700s and now restored, is not particularly interesting; however, there are two frescoes depicting the Annunciation (1491) and the Enthroned Madonna and Child and two Angels (1492), by a local painter from the circle of Vittore Crivelli and Pietro Alamanno, known as the Maestro della Madonna of Misericordia (Master of Our Lady of Mercy).
